USF vs. UCSF

Does anyone else here find that people get the two schools confused a lot?
I had a job interview yesterday, where the person told me the "medical directer of the facility did his OB/GYN rotation at USF."

But USF doesn't have a med school!

Has anyone else run into this problem?

just yesterday we were talking about someone who's a professor of literature or some such and someone said the guy teaches at UCSF which is very unlikely...

I hear it all the time. I have to spell out the abbreviations for people to understand the difference.

First, to dear Nurse Lisa... CONGRATULATIONS on your graduation!

Second, the UCSF "thing" has been a problem as long as I can remember. The trick I learned along the way is to say "the University of San Francisco" rather than "USF". People rarely hear UCSF referred to as anything but those 4 letters and it makes them stop and think.

"USF" is more often identified with the right school today than it once was in Silicon Valley (especially in the tech world). I don't know if we've just made headway down here or if it's the "SCU" phenomena (Silicon Valley is full of Santa Clara grads and they know exactly who "USF" is).

With that said, I've spent more than half my career in biotech and it's still a fairly common issue in this arena. After all, how my PhDs in molecular biology does USF turn out? That's where I came up with "the University of...."

I wear "USF" on my sleeve (or is it the old school tie?) and we WILL prevail!

Ugh! As a USF alumna who now attends a UC for grad school, I encounter this all the time! Drives me insane....

I clarify by saying: "You know, the Jesuit school on top of the hill, with the big church?"

    That usually does the trick.
