finding jobs

I was asked recently if applying for various jobs and sending out resumes is an effective job finding technique. as far as i know, it's much easier to get a job through connections than a random job posting. Although the one position i've ever interviewed for, here in the US, was through an Internet Job Board and it went pretty well (3 interviews before i never heard from them again... :)

it would be interesting to hear about the experiences people here had at looking for jobs, i think this would be especially interesting for tribe members just before graduation.

thanks..this would be definitely helpful. i know there is not an obvious solution or approach, but learning from other people experiences would be quite helpful. I am graduating this may, and not sure where to even start with this job search.

Having looked for a new job numerous times since graduating in 1974 (sometimes voluntarily and sometimes not), the single best advice I can offer is to use every avenue available.

Some people say the best way to find a job is through networking and I agree it works well. But what if you don't have a network?
Start one... pick up the phone and call everyone you know... not becasue they'll have a lead, but becasue they MAY know someone who has a lead. Then call that person and if they don't know of a lead, ask them if they know someone who might... and so on.

Use the alumni network. I like to hire USF grads as a defense against Cal and Stanford... I can't be the only one out there doing the same thing. And there are a lot of USF grads who are headhunters. They can be a great resource even if they aren't in your field (albeit headhunters per se generally aren't very helpful until you get some experience).

Go to the placement center (I know placement centers have a bad reputation, but the name of the game is trying all avenues). One person I hired found me through the placement center not becasue I was hiring but becasue I'm a "mentor" who happens to be in the industry she's interested in.

Nurse Lisa's comment about seeing if a group of Dermatologists would let her follow them around for the day is a good idea. Call up Google, Yahoo or whomever and see if they'll let you do it.

And don't forget newspapers... yes, they work too... and of course the internet... corporate web pages.... Craig's list.

I'm happy to take this up offline with anyone who'd like to chat. Just let me know.

        Hi Karl,

I think that is really good advice. That is exactly what I did this mrning. Go through my cell phone, and start calling every person I knew at some point.

I havent tried the career centre, I should. and I do agree that alumni networking is a great resource. Its can definitely be a little frustrating , but hopefully something will work out
